"Africa must build Africa."
"Africa must build Africa."
In Senegal, a community asked for help, and got it — not from a distant headquarters, but by the people who built and own the AYDA Centre.
AYDA Foundation is not a large charity. It has no celebrity ambassadors, no glossy annual reports, and no paid fundraisers. It is a registered NGO in Senegal, run by a local team that lives and works in the same community it serves. Administration is handled by volunteers. Funds raised go to the ground. The people doing the work are paid for their time.
That is the model. We think more charities should work this way.
AYDA started with a group of engineering students and a community request in 2015. Here is what happened next.
AYDA's operations are built around three mutually agreed objectives with our funding partner, ASOA. Here's how we work.
Free primary education for children in Saint-Louis who would otherwise be crammed into under-resourced public classrooms, or not in school at all. Smaller classes, qualified teachers, and a curriculum that follows the national standard — done properly.
First aid, food, and basic welfare for Talibé children — street children living in makeshift Quranic school orphanages, among the most vulnerable in Senegal. Regular feeding sessions. Medical support. Human contact from people who show up consistently.
Building and improving the physical conditions that make everything else possible. A new orphanage with electricity and running water. Renovated classrooms with roofs that keep the rain out. Better sanitation. A registered football team. When children grow up in conditions that are slightly less harsh, they are more likely to stay in school, stay healthy, and have a chance at something better. That is what elevation means here — not transformation overnight, but conditions that make progress possible.
